New Monthly Cooking Session at Seaforth

Starting on Friday the 26th of April 2024 we will add a third monthly cooking session at Seaforth.

These cooking sessions will be conducted each 4th Friday of the month February through to November and follow the usual format.

If you would like to attend this group please let us know info.nb@menskitchen.org.au

Christmas Lunch done right

Finally, after being locked up for months the members of the Men's Kitchen Northern Beaches were able to gather and celebrate the end of 2021 and the beginning of the Christmas period. Around 100 members and guests gathered at the Community Rooms in Warringah Mall and enjoyed a four course meal prepared by our Head Chef Chris C. and several of our cooking instructors.  We are very grateful of the effort Chris and her team put in to make it a fantastic day.

We would like to acknowledge the donation of fruit and vegetables from Fruitezy at Chatswood Chase and hams and drinks from Woolworths at both Glenrose and Forestway shopping centres.

Old Dogs, New Tricks AND a New VENUE

The Men’s Kitchen Curl Curl has moved .... thanks to Westfield, Warringah Mall.

In 2020, the Men’s Kitchen was the recipient of a Local Heroes Community Grant from Westfield. During the presentation, a fortuitous conversation between our President Peter and Westfield Management led to an offer of the excellent kitchen facilities in the Community Rooms at the Mall. While we have enjoyed the Curl Curl facility, that facility does not allow us to increase our class size, so we eagerly accepted their offer.

Although Covid caused a few delays, we now have a fully operational kitchen in the Community Rooms at Westfield, Warringah Mall. Same cooking timetable, same friendly faces, same Great Mates - and a delicious lunch. New members welcome.

First Men's Kitchen Life Member

During volunteers’ week in late May, when the committee hosted all our cooking instructors to thank them for their contribution to the Men’s Kitchen, we surprised Peter Rudland by awarding him with life membership to the Men’s Kitchen Association.

Life membership of our association may be awarded to someone who in the view of the board has both contributed substantially to the success of the organisation and has made an ongoing contribution for a period of approximately ten years.

In 2013, Peter Rudland and several other blokes joined a Male Carer cooking group run by the NSW department of Health in Narrabeen. When that program was forced to close due to the renovation of the Narrabeen Tram Shed community Centre, Peter was a key driver in the decision to “do our own thing” rather than to cease learning cooking altogether. Peter and five others were the initial members of the association when we incorporated in 2016, and since that time he has continuously been the public officer and secretary of the association. In fact, when we were forced to incorporate in order that we continue cooking, we only had six members and were required to have a public officer and secretary. Had Peter not put his hand up with experience and a willingness to do the task we would simply not be the organisation that we are today.

While we were locked up during 2020, Chris and Trish ran online cooking sessions on a weekly basis. During this time Chris developed all the new recipes for our 2021 recipe book and had the boys on the virtual cooking sessions test them out.

Such was the enjoyment of this the boys presented both ladies with floral arrangements just prior to Christmas last year by way of saying thanks for their considerable efforts during the year.

And as a bonus we now have a fantastic additional compilation of additional recipes in our member's folder. Have you got yours yet?

February sees us back in the Kitchens

After nearly 12 months locked in our homes, unable to enjoy any sort of social life we are delighted to have restarted our Northern Beaches Cooking Sessions in February 2021.

At the end of the month we had restarted our nine monthly physical sessions, with four in Forestville, three in Warriewood and two in Curl Curl. And in addition we are also running an online virtual cooking session on the second and fourth Wednesdays and another on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. (Check out the calendars under "Our Program" below.

Curl Curl Teriaki Chicken

At our Curl Curl Kitchen last week we prepared two delicious dishes. Here is the Teriyaki Salmon with Asian vegetables we prepared.

Curl Curl poached peaches and ice cream

At our Curl Curl Kitchen here is the other simple but also delicious poached peaches and ice cream we made.

As these dishes were simple and delicious, belts needed loosening after the meal  and there was plenty of time for a chat.

While it is not necessary to be older to be a member of the Men’s Kitchen, Morrie is living proof that Old Dogs can in fact learn New Tricks, even when they are turning ninety two.

Congratulations Morrie, we hope you learn lots more new tricks in the Kitchen.

Well, as usual Ian had a great story to tell and in this case Richard hadn’t heard it before, but Barrie was sure he had.
Oh and the two Lemon Merengue Pies they prepared today look brilliant and probably tasted even better!

Even doing the washing up can be fun at Warriewood on the 3rd Wednesday!

Phil and John are proud of the Pear Tart Tatin they cooked at our Westfield Kitchen. And rightly so it was delicious.
