Woden Kitchen hosts its second monthly group

In Woden, interest is very high from older men wishing to develop their culinary skills with some new mates.  At our latest Kitchen we started our second monthly cooking session with another group of ten men wanting to build their skills.

Here is what they said after their first cooking session with us.

I really enjoyed the morning's cooking experience. It was great to meet everyone and enjoy their company. A real buzz all round!

Warwick S.

I thoroughly enjoyed the time. A credit to all involved in getting this going.

Noel A.

"   I enjoyed the cooking and social interaction. It was well organised and I felt it was a comfortable experience for all in attendance. I look forward to the next session in July.

Francis M.

"   Well done for  organising the Canberra Men’s Kitchen. It was a great success. I enjoyed myself and the main course was very good!

You must be satisfied with the feedback that really counts: Everyone was signing up for the long haul.

Canberra Men's Kitchen conducts first regular cooking session

On Wednesday the 22nd of May the Men's Kitchen conducted its first regular monthly cooking session in our Woden Valley Kitchen.

Here are a couple of photos from our first cooking session.

Our first members joining up

Food, glorious food!!!

Here's what the men, who have never cooked previously, rustled up on the day.  Not a bad first day at all.

Canberra Men’s Kitchen officially launched

On Wednesday the 27th March the Canberra Men’s Kitchen conducted its kick off at the Woden Valley Uniting Church.  Attended by 15 potential cooking instructors and 10 other potential volunteers the Sydney team walked everyone through details of the Men’s Kitchen while three cooking instructors and five men prepared Biryani and Smashed Lemon Cheesecake for all to sample.

The day was organised in a manner where the attendees could not only hear about the organisation but could see a cooking session in action mirroring the way each one would be conducted once the Men’s Kitchen becomes fully operational.  And the launch was conducted in the same venue where the future cooking sessions will be conducted, so it already feels like home to those attending.

Commencing on Wednesday May 22nd the Canberra Men’s Kitchen will start its first monthly cooking session. In June a second additional monthly cooking session will be launched and this is planned for Wednesday, June 12th at 11am.

The Men's Kitchen will be setting up a Kitchen in Canberra.

In collaboration with Woden Community Service, the Men's Kitchen will be setting up a new district in Canberra in 2024, with our first Kitchen to be located in the Woden Valley Uniting Church hall.

Our first get together will be in that facility on March 27th 2024, to which we will be inviting those interested in getting the Men's Kitchen operational in Canberra.  Our first actual cooking sessions will be commencing shortly thereafter.

So if you would like to assist us to get started in Canberra please get in touch with us using the contact details above.

Our Program

Canberra District

At each of our cooking sessions we conduct our program in the same manner:

  • We meet at 11am and have a chat about the menu of the day discussing any significant points about each new recipe.
  • Then we form into pairs, with each pair tasked to prepare a complete dish. They then choose which dish they would like to tackle. (Generally, a choice of a main, a dessert or any side dish of the day like flat bread or salad.)
  • Prepare the meal with the cooking instructor helping us to learn by pointing out tips and techniques as we construct our dish.
  • When the meal is ready, we sit together and enjoy the feast we have just made and have a general chat.
  • Plan the menu for the next time we meet. At this point, we seek volunteers to buy the ingredients for each menu item, and a volunteer to wash the aprons and tea towels.
  • Finally, we clear up, wash the dishes and depart by about 2pm.

If you would like to join one of our cooking sessions please contact us via the email address below and register your interest.
