John Brew, a Gold Coast local and retired Captain of Industry in the rail sector who has stepped up to spearhead the Men’s Kitchen launch locally, “Two of my wives passed from cancer. My son said ‘Dad, you’d better learn how to cook.’”
“The thing is, when you learn from a book there’s so much assumed knowledge novice cooks simply don’t have, whereas it’s second nature to the Men’s Kitchen instructors who have been doing it most of their lives. You learn from them how to iron out the wrinkles. I’m impressed that they have so much knowledge up their sleeves.”
“I have three sons who are excellent cooks. They and my daughter were concerned for my nutrition. At 87, I want to stay independent in my own home for as long as possible. I sense that the Men’s Kitchen puts off going to the next phase of living and prolongs independence.”
“I’ve had a successful career and believe you get to a stage where you have to give back in life too, which is why I put my hand up for the Men’s Kitchen. Some of us are working dogs, and you’ve got to keep working, even if it’s volunteering. I believe the best is yet to come and you’ve got to be optimistic,” enthuses Brew.
A huge shoutout to Councillor Dan Doran and the Gold Coast City Council, whose support ensured a fantastic launch. The City Council backing has helped us bring more men together to share laughs, skills, and, of course, delicious meals.
This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding generosity of Newlife Church and its CEO, Brett Lush, who helped secure crucial funding for our brand-new Kitchen in Robina. Not only that, but Newlife has also stepped up as our incredible host, providing a welcoming space for our newest group of budding chefs.
| The Men's Kitchen has selected a Kitchen in RobinaWhile still finalising arrangements for this kitchen we hope to conduct our kick off and monthly cooking sessions from this location in NewLife Care in Robina.
